Victorian seed pearl and turquoise gold bar brooch from 1837-1901. In the mid-century the subject of gem-lore became very popular. For the Victorian's a turquoise gemstone was thought to preserve sight and protect from injury. Even today in the north-east, there is a proverb stating 'That a Turquoise given by a loving hand carries with it happiness and good fortune'. Additionally pearls had multiple meanings, primarily they were associated with 'beauty'.
The brooch is in excellent vintage condition measuring 4cm / 1.5" in length and 4mm / 0.1" in width.
